The following photos show the Bioluminescent Sea Cave in process from beginning to end. Since Angela is an arts educator she felt it might be interesting for folks to see the process.
Although it took over a year of thinking, planning and gathering of materials, the actual construction time of the Bioluminescent Sea Cave was a mere 3 months. The creation of the Cave came on the heals of Angela moving to Bandon-by-the-Sea and thus got squished into a tight time frame. This meant unusually intense work by Angela and her apprentice Faina Nikiforova. Angela worked 12 to 14 hours daily and Faina often put in more than 40 hours per week.
Once completed the Bioluminescent Sea Cave became a traveling art exhibit with additional stops being added after it was on the road. The original installation was in a 8 ft. by 8 ft room, but each gallery, museum or art center had a different space for the Cave. Before traveling on to Newport, Shane Daugherty helped construct a 8 ft. by 10 ft. by 10 ft. steel frame to create a self contained room. Chuck Barber then became Angela's right hand man and added his expertise in welding and construction to finish off the rest of the installations. Angela and Chuck would spend 3 days to carefully install each exhibit as it traveled from place to place. The take down time was approximately 4 hours. With the last 4 stops, the ceiling became more elaborate and the carpet was redone. It traveled to six stops in the year 2008, and withstood the touching by thousands of hands young and old. Almost no repairs have been needed. At most stops The Cave was part of a larger show of sculptures by Angela, entitled, "Undetermined Species". Some of her recent smaller sculptures can be seen in the photo gallery page.
The Bioluminescent Sea Cave, and "Undetermined Species", is available for exhibits in 2009. Until further notice both will land at ART 101 in Bandon, Oregon. Her current projects include a "Sunken Living Room". Please contact Angela Haseltine Pozzi directly to schedule an exhibit.
